The coach/mentor will: "At all times operate within the limits of their own competence, recognize where that competence has the potential to be exceeded and where necessary refer the client either to a more experienced coach/mentor, or support the client in seeking the help of another professional, such as a counsellor, psychotherapist or business/financial advisor”.

The requirement of not exceeding one ́s competence as a coach in a coaching assignment, does add to how we can problematize the current non-expert paradigm of coaching. What competence do we need to not exceed the same in a coaching intervention? In the case of executive or leadership coaching, knowledge of leadership, strategy, organizational development is needed, and ”practical knowledge and knowledge of familiarity” of the business world and related matters (tacit knowing), and the language of management is also in different ways needed to be able to create rapport, understanding and trust in an executive coach client relationship. To be clear, two to five weeks of coaching training does not make a coach in any field. Not without sufficient training, education or experience in any other related field. With related field I here mean in the sense of were the coach will be not exceeding his coaching competence, especially in the case of executive or leadership coaching. This does not mean that an economist with management (leadership) experience from the telecom sector, wouldn’t be able to coach a manager / leader in almost any other sector. While a trained coach with a teacher background, would seldom have the competence to coach a manager / leader in business.
Frågan är var går gränsen? När passerar vi vår kompetensnivå i en coaching intervention, eller vad behöver vi tänka på som coacher för att hålla oss inom gränsen för vår kompetens?
